In addition to using Heading 1 etc. to make an outline, you can also create a new style with a specified outline level. This new style can have any formatting - or even no special formatting at all. This allows you to create a "hidden" structure to your document. The hidden structure will show up in the outline view, and you can also generate a table of contents from it.
